Airless dirge.

The reading for Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant: Confessions of Cooking for One and Dining Alone last night went pretty well. That Ben Karlin sure is funny and Holly Hughes couldn't have been any more charming. And the audience was really attentive and into it, so that made it extra fun for everyone I think.

During the question and answer session I talked about how I am in general an uncomfortable person, which is why eating out by myself is so perfect for me. A nice woman (who I suspected is probably one of these people who is like the best friend ever to have) came up to me afterwards and said, "You can't read in front of thirty people and be uncomfortable with yourself." But I said it's because I can pretend to be someone else, that's why I like it. I was always in school plays and on the speech team and all that and I always kind of dug being someone else, because that person was always more interesting than the real life version of me. I am seriously a bookwormy,internet-addicted, notebook-scribbling snooze fest. No joke.

After the after-party I discovered one of my bike tires was flat. So I hauled it to the F train and took it into the city to transfer at the (notoriously unreliable especially at night) JMZ. I was tired. I'd had a beyond crappy day and had been pretty much faking what little cheer I could muster all night long. I just wanted to go home and watch VH1. (VH1 is always good for making you feel better about your life. Because at least you are not a whore.)

As I rounded the corner for the JMZ transfer, I heard the train pull in up above. There were two flights of stairs. I started running, but I couldn't go too fast with that bike of mine. Still I tried. Please just let me get home, that's all I was thinking. Suddenly behind me some sort of SUPERMAN appeared and grabbed the rear tire of my bike and together we ran up the stairs and onto the train just before the door closed. The man walked down to the other side of the car but I waved and thanked him and then knocked on the window after I got off at the next stop and thanked him again and here I am thanking him one more time not that he will ever read this because he is clearly out there SAVING LIVES and STOPPING CRIMES or at the very least HOLDING DOORS OPEN and HELPING BLIND OLD LADIES CROSS THE STREET.

Seriously that dude ruled.

Anyway.

The Class of 2008 Readings @ Boxcar Lounge is coming back for one final year and then I am retiring it. (Or handing it off to someone, if anyone is interested.) Wednesday, November 14 is the first reading. I am waiting to hear about one more person and then I will post everyone's bios and more complete information, but I can tell you Sloane Crosley, Daphne Beal, and Will Leitch will be kicking it off. Should be an interesting night.

West coast tour dates coming soon.

And yes I realize this site is going to turn into an explosion of self-promotion in the next few months but it's not every day you meet a SUPERHERO.
